Fourth webinar in the series ‘JAITRA – Marching Ahead’

Speaker: Ar. Mausaumi & Ar.Uday Andhare

Women’s education Society’s Smt. Manoramabai Mundle College of Architecture, Nagpur recently organized the Fourth webinar in the series ‘JAITRA – Marching Ahead’ on the 31st October 2020. The speaker for the webinar was Ar.Uday & Ar. Mausaumi  Andhare Principal architects of Indigo Architects, Ahmedabad

Ar. Andhare spoke about their journey as an architect starting from CEPT as a Students to being part of larger fraternity of Architects. They also talked about their teachers, peers and surrounding which influenced their works. They explained the design process of project right from inception, conceptualization, to final construction. Ar. Mausaumi talked about importance of research  and how it is an integral part of their projects. Their work addresses several facets of a conscious eco- sensitive approach to architecture. Their work reveals importance of ‘place’ over ‘form’, exploring many overlapping layers of the formal and informal, to bring about a rich spatial experience in seemingly simple gestures. They explained in detailed their few projects such as The Living & Learning Design Center Museum (LLDC), the Ajrakh printing studio, in Ajrakhpur Kutch, Natarani Amphitheatre in Ahmedabad, residences and institutions.

With the help of their projects, they explained Strategies for thermal comfort in buildings, use of lime and local materials in contemporary design, drawing from traditional wisdom which are cornerstones of their practice. They believe that ‘architectural expression’ rooted in these sensibilities, can define a language that belongs to its time and place.

Dr. Ujwala Chakradeo, Principal, Smt. Manoramabai Mundle College of Architecture gave the welcome address. The programme was conducted by Dr.Sujata Godbole, Convenor of the webinar . Question and answer session were conducted by Dr. Neeta Lambe, and students Ms. Aishwarya Khilosiya and Ms. Shreya Uttarwar. The webinar received an exceptionally good response from students as well as professionals of architecture. Technical support for this webinar was given by Ar.Vaijayanti Yadav and Ar. Sneha Mandekar.

Third webinar in the series ‘JAITRA – Marching Ahead’

Speaker: Ar. Devendra Bawdane

Smt. Manoramabai Mundle College of Architecture recently organized the Third webinar in the series ‘JAITRA – Marching Ahead’ on the 31st of October 2020. The speaker for the webinar was Ar. Devendra Bawdane, Principal Architect of ddba.

Ar. Devendra talked about his journey as an Architect. He shared his experience of working with Ar. Charles Correa. He talked about how unlearning is important in architecture and then relearn…. from experiences of self and others. He has worked on various projects ranging from Commercial, residential, institutional, Museum, high end Residential interiors etc. In his presentation he explained the design process of project right from inception, conceptualization, to final construction. He explained in detailed his recent projects such as:

  • Mahul Mangrove Trail & Rejuvenating Ramadevi Temple Precinct (Maharashtra Forest Department).
  • Gorai Mangrove Park, (Maharashtra Forest Department)
  • Dahisar Mangrove Park, (Maharashtra Forest Department)
  • Mangrove Department control command centre, (Maharashtra Forest Department)

Second webinar in the series ‘JAITRA – Marching Ahead’

Speaker: Ar. Chetan Shivprasad

Smt. Manoramabai Mundle College of Architecture, Nagpur recently organized the second webinar in the series ‘JAITRA – Marching Ahead’ on the 17th of October 2020. The speaker for the webinar was Ar. Chetan Shivprasad, the founder of Kham Design, Bengaluru and managing trustee of Hampi School of Design.

Ar. Shivprasad spoke on his fascinating journey as an Architect, evident through his architectural designs steeped in experimentation of architectonic elements and spaces, and the rich vocabulary of design elements. He shared his passion for exploration of the third dimension through model-making and for documentation of architectural works, both of which shaped his unique journey as an architect. His architectural designs speak volumes about honesty of material and connectedness to the roots.

Dr. Ujwala Chakradeo, Principal, Smt. Manoramabai Mundle College of Architecture gave the welcome address. The programme was conducted by Dr. Sujata Godbole, Convenor of the webinar. Question and answer session was conducted by Dr. Sampada Peshwe, Co-convenor, and students Ms. Unnati Dhande and Ms. Shraddha Supare. First webinar in the series ‘JAITRA – Marching Ahead’

Speaker: Ar.Abin Choudhuri

Smt. Manoramabai Mundle College of Architecture, Campus, Seminary hills, Nagpur has organized a webinar JAITRA- Marching Ahead, on 14th September 2020 and inauguration of virtual Exhibition of SMMCA students’ work Pradnya Darpan. The speaker for this was Ar.Abin Choudhuri, a young award-winning Architect from Kolkata. He inaugurated Virtual Exhibition.

He talked on his journey as an Architect. He said Architecture is not a just a profession to just design interiors, residences, villas, or Government buildings but architecture is also about creating Ideas. Profession has a power to change and influence people and play a significant role to lead society. Through his presentation he explained his works which focuses on the idea of holistic design, not just limiting to ideas, but also physical manifestation through multi-disciplinary collaboration. His works also demonstrates, experimentation with materials and technology, and the local art and culture.

Dr. Ujwala Chakradeo, Principal, Smt.Manoramabai Mundle College of Architecture also speak on this occasion. Question and answer session was conducted by Prof. Sujata Godbole. Webinar received a good response from 12th Std.students and their parents, Students of Architecture and Architects. Prof. Sujata Godbole was Convenor of the Programme and Akansha Agarwala was Co-convenor. Technical team for this webinar was Ar.Vaijayanti Yadav and Ar.Sneha Mandekar.

Webinar on Sthapatya Shrunkhala: “CONVERSATION”

A webinar on STHAPATYA SHRUNKHALA: “CONVERSATION” was conducted by the Alumni Association of Architecture Education, Women’s Education Society’s Smt. Manoramabai Mundle College of Architecture (SMMCA), Nagpur on the 7th of August 2020, from 4pm to 5:00pm.

The speaker for the webinar was Ar. Deepti Tangri, alumni of SMMCA, presently practising as an Architect, Interior Designer at Thane. She recently received the prestigious honor of being  one amongst the three Best Women Architects to watch by in 2020 by Demode Architecture and Interior magazine. She spoke about her journey from SMMCA to profession, Architecture as a profession and Challenges for Women in Architecture.

Dr.Ujwala Chakradeo, Prinicipal of SMMCA welcomed the guests while Ar. KetkiTidke, Convenor of the webinar highlighted about the objectives of the webinar. COWA Incharge & Co-convener, Ar. Anuradha Tikkas conducted the interactive question & answer session.

Women’s Education Society’s Smt. Manoramabai Mundle College of Architecture hosted a Webinar on ‘Masters in Architeture – Prospects and Options’ on 1st August 2020 at 4.00 pm.This webinar was organized for the students  in the field of Architecture. Architecture is one of the humane professions like medicine. Graduating with a bachelor’s degree in architecture is an accomplishment worthy of celebration. At this juncture in the students life, when they have completed or are on the verge of completing B.Arch, the decisions taken , the choices made have a profound effect on their future life. It is important to make an informed decision while choosing the right post graduation course. A masters course widens horizons and enriches the thought process. It is a choice to be made considering your potentials and career goals. This webinar titled ‘Masters in Architecture – Prospects and Options’ aimed to discuss about the various options available to pursue masters course along with future prospects after completion.

The webinar started with a small talk by Dr. Ujwala Chakradeo, Principal, SMMCA, Nagpur. She talked about the importance of a masters degree and its implications. The speakers included Dr. Lakshmi Rao who spoke about the Masters in Architecture – Architecture Education Course offered at SMMCA, Nagpur. Dr. Priya Choudhary gave an insight into the different streams in which a masters degree can be pursued. She also spoke about the newly established Urban Design Course offered at SMMCA, Nagpur and gave a glimpse into the work of the students.

Another speaker Ar. Kaushal Jajoo spoke about the competitive exams required for admission into a masters course along with the important stream of Master in Urban Planning and its sub streams.

Dr. Sampada Peshwe on an ending note talked about the design related streams in which a masters degree can be obtained.

The session ended with a question answer session conducted by Ar. Renuka Chakradeo where students asked an array of questions answered by our esteemed speakers.

Dr. Shyamala Nair, Director , Women’s Education Society (WES) and Dr. UjwalaChakradeo, Principal, SMMCA had urged students, academicians, professionals from the fraternity to attend it. And a good response was received with around 380 registrations for the event.

The speakers at the webinar were Er.Jatin Ambani, an award winning Project Management Consultant from Mumbai and Ar.Mahesh Mokha, a senior architect and academician. Er. Ambani explained the various steps to be adopted for filing project proposals and urged the audience to make a strong career as Entrepreneurs.  Ar.Mokha spoke on the scope of construction management in today’s scenario and the changing dimensions of project management in the post covid scenario.

Manoramabai Mundle College of Architecture (SMMCA) successfully conducted a webinar on “Energy Efficient Air-Conditioning” on 23rd June 2020. The webinar was organized for all the Students, Academicians and Professionals of Architecture.

Dr. Ujwala Chakradeo Principal of the institute welcomed the guest and in her opening remarks stressed on the importance of providing air conditioning in buildings due to the extreme weather conditions. Ar. Gurunath Modak giving insight on the topic talked of the various mis-conceptions associated with air conditioning and the need to understand how energy can be conserved while using it.

The keynote speaker of the webinar was Shri. Abhilash Shah, Senior Executive Sales, Blue star limited. He informed about the various means and methods and the products to be used while conserving energy in air conditioning.

WOMEN’S Education Society’s Smt. Manoramabai Mundle College of Architecture (SMMCA) successfully conducted a webinar on “Fire Safety in Buildings- Role of an Architect”. The webinar was organized for all the Students, Academicians and Professionals of Architecture.

The keynote speaker of the webinar was Dr. Shorab Jain, Senior Scientist of CBRI, Roorkee. He has a vast experience in the field of fire safety and was instrumental in starting the work on predicting smoke movement inside built environment using CFD in the institute. He is working on policy issues relating to fire. He shared his experiences and explained in detail the measures to be taken in the building design for fire safety.

Dr. Ujwala Chakradeo Principal of the institute in her opening remarks explained the importance of the topic in the architecture curriculum and informed the steps the institute is taking towards sensitizing the students towards the issue.

Professor Dr. Pratima Dhoke gave an insight into fire safety designing of buildings and where the architect fails in taking the required measures during designing and planning of buildings

COVID 19 awareness initiative by SMMCA students

At the time of this crisis, the NASA students association of SMMCA have decided to contribute something for the betterment of the society.
In order to contribute, the team came up with the video. The video is all about the various safety measures that one must follow in this pandemic COVID 19. It also displays various interesting activities that one can perform during the lockdown, it gave a boost to carry on the hobbies that were forgotten due to the busy life.

The team was excited from the very beginning and much more interesting ideas have been shared about spreading awareness in some creative way. We have distributed the topics and activities among ourselves according to our interest. It didn’t take so long to receive the video because everyone was equally excited. When we received the final compilation of the video the team was excited to share it with our faculties and families.

Overall it was a process to learn many new things about the awareness, the compilation but the most important is the teamwork and the coordination, this gave us the chance to know the team more closely and it was an amazing experience for the team.

Women’s Education Society’s, Smt. Manoramabai Mundle College of Architecture (SMMCA), Nagpur successfully hosted a webinar on ‘Architecture as a career option.’

This webinar was organized for aspiring students who are interested to make their career in the architecture profession. This is the second webinar in the SMMCA Webinar series. The earlier was on ‘Urban Design for Democratisation of Cities’

The keynote speaker for this webinar was Ms. Rita Aggarwal, a leading career counselor in central India. She has experience of more than 38 years in the field of psychology and has established herself as the leading pioneer of a psychological counselor.

She is on the advisory board of schools and colleges in Nagpur and Hyderabad. She explained in detail about architecture career and its future prospects.

Prof. Dr. Ujwala Chakradeo, Principal, SMMCA, has experience in academics for more than three decades. She is associated with many universities on the advisory board and is a supervisor to more than a dozen Ph.D. scholars. She has authored three books, and have numerous national and international papers to her credit.

Prof. Dr. Chakradeo highlighted on career building in architecture after graduation. She shaded light on the varied field of specialization, and different sectors where students can establish themselves in the architecture profession.

Dr. Sampada Peshwe elaborated on the ambiance in schools of architecture. She explained the role of creativity, technicality, and excitement that students enjoy during these five years of professional courses.

Dr. Neeta Lambe gave an insight into the admission process and the expectations from the applicant while appearing for the entrance examinations.

There were many queries related to the architecture as a professional course and admission process for the academic year 2020-21. All the queries were answered by the panelists and the question-answer session was conducted by Dr.Madhura Rathod.

The webinar was concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Ar. Sujata Godbole.

Urban Design Department of Women’s Education Society’s Smt. Manoramabai Mundle College of Architecture hosted a Webinar on “Holistic Urban Design for Democratization of Cities ” on 27th of May 2020 on Zoom.  This webinar was organized for the students and professionals of the field of Architecture and Urban Design. In a diverse populous and unevenly developing country like India, Architecture and Urban Design needs to be connected with larger public aspirations. This is the first in the webinar series on urban design issues hosted by Urban Design Department of SMMCA followed by other interesting sessions in coming weeks.

Key note speaker was Ar. P.K. Das from Mumbai is a renowned Architect, Urban Designer and Activist. He has an experience of more than 37 years of working in the field of architecture and urban design. P K. Das through his works has been able to establish a very close relation between architecture, urban design, city and its people by involving them in a participatory planning process. He has been widely published and has also delivered talks & lectures across the world. He has won several national & international awards from “Urban Age Award”, “Cleanwater Citizens Award” and most recently the prestigious first International “Jane Jacobs Medal”-2016. His wide spectrum of work includes organizing slum dwellers for better living and evolving affordable housing models, engaging in policy framework for mass housing, conservation projects, urban renewal reclaiming the public spaces in Mumbai by developing the waterfronts, re-envisioning the city involving urban planning, urban design and architecture assignments across the country.
