Seven students from SMMCA participated in Indo German summit on 5.3.2020 at Tirpude college of social works. The students discussed on the social issues of Frankfurt And Nagpur and sounded it similar.Also they realized that students can help a lot to serve the society.
Green quiz on sustainability – “THINK GREEN 2020” – 15 Feb 2020
Green Quiz on Sustainability “THINK GREEN 2020”, took place at SMMCA Auditorium on 15 Feb 2020. It had elimination round for 6 participating teams, those are SDMCA, TGPCA, VNIT, SMMCA, IDEAS and PIADS.
The quiz was played among 4 finalists and the winner is VNIT, winning cash prize of Rs. 5000. 1st Runner up team is SMMCA and won cash prize of Rs.3000. 2nd Runner up team is IDEAS and won Rs. 2000. PIADS won consolation prize of Rs. 1000. The prizes were given by Dr Ujwala Chakradeo, Principal SMMCA and Ar. Ashok Mokha, Chairman, IGBC Vidarbha zone.
The quiz was conducted by Mr. Anup Manchalwar. The event was coordinated by Ar. Madhuri Gehani, Ar. Vaijayanti Yadav and Ar. Rashmi Tijare.
SMMCA hosted Annual Winter Drawing & Essay Competition – 2nd February 2020
Organized in association with INTACH Nagpur Chapter, the event received an overwhelming response from 90 schools with over 750 participants. The theme GANDHI@150, focused on environmental degradation and prevention for better future. SMMCA hosted Annual Winter Drawing & Essay Competition on 2nd February, 2020.
Along with some major learning the organizers and participants had fun and frolic at the event.

SCHOLARS OF SMMCA PhD CENTRE AWARDED PH.D. – 18th January 2020
Women’s Education Society’s Smt. Manoramabai Mundle College of Architecture is one of Central India’s leading architecture institutions. In the 107th convocation conducted by Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University on 18th January 2020, five Ph.D. scholars of the SMMCA PhD Centre have brought laurels to the college.
Dr. Madhura Rathod, Dr. Mukund Athawle, Dr. Aparna Dixit, Dr. Shubhangi Kadam and Dr. Arundhati Wategave, all scholars ftom SMMCA PhD Centre, were awarded their Ph.D.s.
SMMCA Ph.D. Centre is headed by Dr. Ujwala Chakradeo, Principal, SMMCA and Dr. Roopal Deshpande is the Centre Co-ordinator.
Women’s Day Celebration – 9th March 2019
Every year we celebrate women’s day by felicitating one of the renowned & successful women Architect and our Alumni. This year program was divided into two session. In morning session, Ar. Shweta Rajgarhia, an alumini of 1998 batch, from Delhi presented her work to students and interacted with them. This session was very interactive, and students were inspired by her work. Other alumni were also present for this session.
Evening Program was started by chanting of saraswati Vandana by our 1st year student Gauri Damle. Followed by Prize distribution of various competition, Felicitation of Guest and Presentation by Ar. Suraksha Acharya.
On this occasion we felicitated well-known Architect from Chennai Ar.Suraksha Acharya. She majorly worked in field of environment friendly structures. She gave presentation on “Beyond Sustainability: Future Built Environment” was the broader area upon which Ar. Suraksha Acharya elaborated on. She discussed her ideas about sustainability through her projects. She motivated students of architecture to work hard and explore boundaries.
Every year on International Women’s Day (8th March) we felicitate our Alumni who has contributed in the field of Architecture. This year we felicitated Ar.Shweta Rajgarhia
On this occasion, students who have brought laurels to the College were awarded for their various achievements. Prizes of competition such as Endowment Prizes, Shrisatya Award for excellence in final year architectural thesis, Best Student Award, Bharat Yamsanwar award, Ar. Sunil Toye Landscape competition, Scholarship J.K.Cement & CERA were given to students.
Prize winners of drawing competition, which is our annual event were also honoured on this occasion.
We felicitated our Prof. Ar. Shriram Marathe who received the prestigious MASA Gold Medal 2018 for lifetime contribution to the cause of Architecture education.
Mrs. Rupali Gotmare Pable Librarian at SMMCA was also felicitated upon being conferred Doctoral degree.
“Milestone” college newsletter and “Her space” a student’s magazine was also released.
Dr. Ujwala Chakradeo Principal SMMCA, Dr. Shyamala Nair Director and Secretary Women’s Education society were present for the function. Ar. Sujata Godbole was the convener for the programme. The programme was well received by the students, parents and Member from the architectural fraternity.
9th March was celebrated as Annual day of SMMCA, on this occasion meritorious students of college and students who have brought laurels to the College by winning awards in various competition and sports were felicitated. Eminent lawyer Adv. Sunil Manohar President, Women’s education Society was chief guest of function.

FIRST YEAR INDUCTION PROGRAMME 2019-20 BATCH
PANEL DISCUSSION ON BASICS OF GREEN AND SUSTAINABILITY
On 26th March 2019, a panel discussion on Basics of Green and Sustainability was arranged at SMMCA in collaboration with IGBC Vidarbha Students Chapter.
The expert panellists included the following eminent personalities –
1. Ar. Ashok Mokha, Chairman IGBC Vidarbha Chapter
2. Mr. Devendra Mahajan, General Manager, (Environment Division) Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Limited.
3. Dr. Rahul Ralegaonkar, Professor, Department of Civil engineering, VNIT
4. Dr. Sarika Bahadure, Assistant Professor, Department of Architecture and Planning, VNIT, and
5. Ar. Anand Chati, Practicing Green Building Architecture at Nagpur
The program started with formal welcome and felicitation of the panellists. Ar. Ashok Mokha gave a presentation on topic and showed a short film in memory of Late. P. C. Jain.
A coffee table book on IGBC was gifted to college by Ar. Ashok Mokha. All panellists then spoke about their views on the topic, after which an interactive session with students was held.
Ar. Vaijayanti Yadav (Chapter head of Students Chapter at SMMCA) and Ar. Rashmi Tijare (Convener IGBC Students Chapter Vidarbha) coordinated the Event.
BEYOND SUSTAINABILITY – FUTURE BUILT ENVIRONMENT
A panel discussion was conducted on the 9th of March 2019 as a precursor to the ‘Women’s Day Function’ on the 8th March 2019. The topic of discussion was ‘Beyond Sustainability – Future Built Environment’.
The panelists included Ar. Suraksha Acharya (Chennai), Dr. Roopal Deshpande, Ar. Tarika Dagadkar, Ar. Ketki Tidke & Ar. Rashmi Tijare. The panellists spoke about their understanding of sustainability and an intense discussion was conducted on the same.
Taking it further, as we all know a sustainable approach being the need of the hour, right from the paints we use to high rise structures that we construct, sustainability is an approach necessary for us as architects and future architects, to understand and have an integrated approach towards it. The intention of this panel discussion was to have an exchange of ideas about various approaches to sustainability and the current trends.
The panel discussion was moderated by Ar. Poornima Deshpande & Ar. Rita Meshram.
IPR WORKSHOP
A workshop on Intellectual Property Rights was conducted on 8th feb 2019 for final year students of B. Arch., students of M. Arch. and academicians. The workshop was in collaboration with Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Intellectual Property Management. The workshop intended to orient the participants about the basics of IPR, trademarks and its significance.
The resource persons for the workshop were Mr. Pankaj Borkar, Deputy Controller of Patents and Designs RGNIIPM, Dr. Ushoshi Guha, Patent Attorney Govt of India & Dr. Sona Kumar, GH Raisoni Law school. There was also a panel discussion in which participants interacted with the experts and had insights about filing and applying of Patents. Also, the significance of Patents was discussed for the Architecture and Design Industry.
The convener of the workshop was Dr. Roopal Deshpande and was co-ordinated by Ar. Renuka Chutke.
UNSCHOOLED DAY
A group of ‘Unusual Artists’ celebrated Art & Design on the 11th of Feb, 2019 at SMMCA, Nagpur
The interesting activity was titled ‘One Sense-Less Meet’ wherein students were blindfolded and were asked to conduct certain activities in order to create sensitivity among architecture students for visually impaired people and universal design.
The activity was conducted by Palak Bansal and her group and co-ordinated by Dr. Sampada Peshwe.
RESEARCH PRESENTATIONS SERIES 2019
A unique venture of ‘Research Presentations Series 2019’, a public presentation program by faculty members of SMMCA under the aegis of MIMANSA Research Cell was initiated. The purpose is to encourage research among students and at the same time, it is a guideline for researchers and academicians. There has been healthy participation from various colleges in Nagpur and other cities as well. Four presentations have been given by – Dr. Priya Choudhary, Dr. Roopal Deshpande, Dr. Sampada Peshwe and Dr. Neeta Lambe in January and February. The next five presentations will be in the upcoming academic session of 2019 – 10.
The events are coordinated by Dr. Roopal Deshpande, Ar. Mrinmayee Tiwari and Ar. Namrata Tharwani Gaurkhede.
HANDS-ON WORKSHOPS
SMMCA introduced ‘Hands On Workshop’ of 7 to 10 days as an Additional Academic activity for 4th years students in the first week of to have Experiential Learning. After the workshop, students shared their experience and also presented the work done at these 3 different workshops –
- Design Jatra, Dahanu (Mud Construction Techniques) – Total 41 girls participated and 2 faculties accompanied them;
- Alishan, Nagpur (Earth Bag Construction) – 27 girls participated and
- Maker’s Adda, Nagpur (Wood in Architecture & Construction – 32 girls participated
